#EmmysSoWhite Trends Again as No Actors of Color Win Despite Record Nominations

Women were still able to dominate the creative categories, and two women have won for the first time for best comedy and drama director

The Primetime Emmy Awards was not able to go through its historic and diverse nomination categories, since every major award went to white actors.

Some actors who were so close to winning include Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez for Pose, the late Michael K. Williams for Lovecraft Country, and Kenan Thompson and Bowen Yang for Saturday Night Live.

Michaela Coel was nominated for four Emmys, and won for the writing limited category for I May Destroy You. Coel became the third Black creative for winning that category and the first ever Black woman.

An all time record of 49 non-Anglo creatives were nominated for the acting and reality competition categories. Actors like Jason Sudeikis for Ted Lasso, Jean Smart for Hacks, and Gillian Anderson for The Crown were guaranteed winners, but many Black stats were expected to pick up an award or two, like anyone from Hamilton or Regé-Jean Page for Bridgerton.

Billy Porter and Mj Rodriguez were favoured heavily to win lead actor and actress for Pose, but were beaten by Josh O’Connor and Olivia Colman for The Crown. This resulted in a loss for both people of colour and the LGBTQ community. Emma Corrin, who joined The Crown as Princess Diana would’ve been the first non-binary actor to win in the acting category, but failed.

Compared to last year where four actors of colour picked up Emmys for lead actors/ actresses, this year it went down to zero.
